Acer is a long-time Microsoft partner, but when it comes to smartphones, the Taiwanese company is less represented on the market. The latest Windows Phone handset launched by Acer, the Allegro, hit shelves back in late 2011.

Since then, Acer has focused its smartphone business on Android and the mid-range market, in particular. However, with the launch of Windows 10 for Phones, Acer is ready to return to the smartphone market with a Windows Phone handset.

PhoneArena cites a report coming from Focus Taiwan, which claims Acer confirmed it would unveil a new Windows 10 smartphone next month during Mobile World Congress 2015 (MWC) trade fair.

Acer CEO Jason Chen also stated during a press conference that his company was one of the few offering Windows-based devices in all sizes, from smartphones to tablets and notebooks.

It's unclear when exactly Acer will make the announcement, but MWC 2015 is set to start on March 2. However, many companies prefer to make their biggest launches a few days ahead of trade fair's opening and this year Samsung and HTC will announce their flagships on March 1.

An Android-based Acer Jade smartphone will be released too

Acer's presence at MWC 2015 won't mean just showcasing some of its notebooks and tablets, as the company confirmed it would also release an Android smartphone alongside the Windows 10 handset.

A new version of the Acer Liquid Jade will be announced and showcased by the Taiwanese company at MWC 2015. No word on specs sheet yet, but more details may leak in the coming days.

Even if Acer announces a Windows 10 smartphone next week, the mobile phone won't go on sale until Microsoft doesn't release the final version of the operating system.

The Redmond-based company has just released a technical preview, which is now being tested by users who own one of the compatible smartphones.
