Gianfranco Lanci's huge severance pay forced its hand

The departure of Gianfranco Lanci, Acer's former chief executive officer, and the subsequent tensions (to say the least) between him and the company, led to the establishment of a remuneration committee and, now, a modification to the CEO payment policy.

When Lanci left, last year, his severance pay was decided based on his contract, Acer's market value at the time and government policies in Italy.

The sum of NT$1.28 billion (US$42.8 million / 33.86 million Euro) was still huge though, especially after the losses that Acer suffered in Europe because of Lanci's strategy.

From now on, according to Digitimes, Acer will connect pay with work efficiency and even adopt deferred payments or reclaim salaries from executives, in order to ensure shareholder interests.

To gain a taste of what tough times Acer went through after its 2011 policy changes, take a look at the abysmal second quarter. For the more recent troubles, go here.
