Computer maker Acer is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a cheap Android tablet that will sport a 7-inch touchscreen display, the same as Google’s already highly popular Nexus 7 slate.

The new slate is said to land on shelves in the first quarter of the next year, and should sport a price tag of around $99 (€75), a recent report on DigiTimes reads.

Rumor has it that Acer is set to pack the device with a MediaTek processor, which will help the company reduce production costs for it. However, nothing has been officially confirmed on this for the time being.

The info reportedly comes from sources with the Taiwan-based supply chain makers, who claim that ASUS also had such a device under development, but did not launch it due to its collaboration with Google on the Nexus 7 device.
