Freescale's i.MX515 is a high-performance, feature-rich application processor that is capable of giving various devices the ability to play back multimedia files and even perform widget applications. The chip is made of six different parts: an ARM Cortex-A8 core, an image processing unit, a vector floating point unit, a 2D graphics accelerator, a 3D graphics accelerator, an ARM NEON SIMD media accelerator and a multi-standard 720p hardware video codec. Acer has been working on a monitor that integrates this processor's abilities, the DisplayPlus D241H.

“The DisplayPlus D241H is much more than just a PC monitor. It’s a modern-day bulletin board that serves the whole family’s simple, digital life. The D241H allows users to view information and conduct select online activities instantly without having to turn on the PC,” Arthur Pai, associate vice president, Digital Display Business Unit, Acer Inc., said.

“By embedding the Freescale i.MX515 processor into our monitor design, we will offer users an affordable solution that allows instant information sharing to enhance family interaction and activities. This includes receiving email/SMS, checking real-time news and weather, editing your online calendar, using the media player and more.”

The DisplayPlus D241H will soon be completed by Acer and will boast widget application support and the ability for multimedia playback. The i.MX515 hardware video codec is able to accelerate motion video and even decode HD 720p movies at up to 30 fps. The upcoming monitor will not only integrate this capability but will even incorporate Freescale's MC13892 power management IC and the SGTL5000 audio codec. This means that the monitor itself will not need a PC system for media playback, saving desk space.

“Acer’s newest smart monitor is an innovative product that showcases the range and depth of Freescale’s product portfolio for consumer markets,” Bernd Lienhard, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division, added. “Freescale is pleased to help world-class companies like Acer deliver compelling new offerings that advance the state of consumer electronics.”

Freescale will be demonstrating the Acer smart monitor in private meeting suites at CES 2010. The product will be formally introduced by Acer during the first quarter.
