Hearing of 2D content being converted into 3D isn't new, but learning that there are monitors that do it definitely is.The
new display that Acer created, and which bears the name of HR274H, claims to accomplish just that.
Normally, converting 2D content into 3D requires specialized software and is something that not all media players can accomplish.
PCs can handle it well enough, since installing the necessary application is easy.
Acer's 27-inch monitor will make that unnecessary through its chip solution, which does 2D to 3D conversion on-the-fly.
Otherwise, the product is not so unique, although the dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1 places it in the same category as just a handful of others.
The native resolution is, as it is easy enough to assume, 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, which implies support for full HD photo and video quality.
Also, the response time is 2ms (gray to gray) and the brightness is 250 cd/m2.
Buyers should know that this isn't one of those revolutionary, glasses-free models. It will take a pair of polarized glasses for the image sets to be synced.
Fortunately, Acer did the sensible thing and included some of those glasses, featuring the film-patterned retarder (FPR) technology, which eliminates flicker.
They are even lightweight, which means that comfort won't be much of an issue, though the standard 3D health hazards still apply (dizziness, eyestrain, headaches after long hours, etc., depending on one's predisposition to such things).
Other specifications include two HDMI ports, one VGA connector, built-in speakers, LED backlighting, and a stand with angle adjustments. It costs $599 (449 Euro).
“The Acer HR274H delivers the highest level of realism available for fans of 3D games, TV programming, movies and photos,” said Chris White, senior director of product marketing, Acer America.
“Every detail is so clear, bright and rich in color, immersing yourself in your favorite game or movie has never been so utterly exhilarating.”
