With 2008 being one of the most successful years for Acer's portable PC lineup, the computer maker has recently expressed its intentions to become the number one PC vendor. The plan, which was voiced out by the company's president and CEO, Gianfranco Lanci, is expected to be carried out within a year, consequently replacing the two current leaders, HP and Dell. A major role in Acer's plan will be played by its successful and
growing portfolio of portable computer systems, including its line of Aspire One netbooks.
According to a recent news article on English-language Techradar, Lanci claims that Acer “will be number one within a year,” a statement made during a product presentation in Amsterdam.
The statement is undoubtedly bold, given the most recent market figures presented by Gartner, which indicated that HP had grabbed 18.5 percent of the market share, while Dell and Acer managed a 14.3 and 11.1 percent market share in 2008. However, according to Lanci, Acer expects that both HP and Dell will lose their strength in the market over the next year.
The manufacturer is aiming to accomplish its bold plans by placing a big bet on the development of more Internet-enabled devices, which will allow it to become the “world's leading mobile solution company.” Acer will continue to develop its Aspire One line of ultraportable computer systems, but also its recently launched series of ultra-thin portable PCs dubbed Timeline and designed to take advantage of Intel's CULV platform.
Acer has recently updated its entire line of portable computer systems, also introducing the world's first PC that takes advantage of NVIDIA's Ion Platform, dubbed Aspire Revo. In addition, the company also unveiled some new Aspire One netbooks, one of which will provide users with a larger, 11-inch display.
