In what can only be deemed a rather surprising turn of events, Acer, the third worldwide major computer systems vendor, has managed to ship more portable computer systems internationally last month than both HP and Dell, the two largest notebook vendors. If the reported figures are true, then Acer could soon claim the number one spot in the notebook market, even earlier than its self-imposed initial target, set for 2011.

According to reliable industry sources cited by Digitimes, the Taiwanese systems vendor managed to ship 3.4-3.6 million portable computer systems, including netbooks. This figure is said to illustrate Acer's market performance in September, while also making the company the leading notebook vendor worldwide, surpassing both Hewlett-Packard and Dell. Moreover, it appears that almost half of the reported figures were due to the Aspire One netbook, which recorded shipments of 1.2-1.3 million units.

According to the same inside sources, Palo Alto, California-based HP registered shipments of 2.2 – 2.3 million notebooks in September, while competitor Dell managed to ship only 1.8-1.9 million units. The numbers clearly indicate that Acer has succeeded in claiming an impressive market share, although the company is currently the number three player in the worldwide market. However, that might change soon if it can maintain its market performance, and ship more systems than its direct competitors.

It is unclear yet if the reported numbers include the shipments of Gateway and Packard Bell notebooks, which Acer has acquired, but even so, the numbers are nothing but impressive – that, without even mentioning that they allow Acer to hope for a brighter future as far as its computer systems business is concerned.

Digitimes also reports that market watchers expect Acer to become the notebook market leader, even before the self-imposed 2011 target. Moreover, should the reports turn out to be accurate, they are all the more impressive, as they come to confirm Acer's position in the newly emerged market of netbooks, where the company has a solid competitor in ASUS.
