Hybrid enthusiasts might be familiar with Acer’s Aspire Switch family which includes 10-inch, 11-inch models and soon enough a 12-inch version.

The Switch 10 was the first to make it out into the world sporting an 11-inch display with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, but the company soon provided an update which bestowed an improved FHD res and Gorilla Glass 3 coating for better durability plus a slightly improved processor.

As for the Acer Aspire Switch 11, the product saw the light of day at IFA 2014. The tablet/laptop convertible uses a 4th generation Intel Core i5 processor fitted with 4GB of RAM and has a 128GB SATA hard drive.

Acer adds a smart stylus to the bundle

Acer wants to market these devices as productivity tools, so the company will soon be offering the Acer Aspire Active Stylus as an optional accessory for the 2-in-1 devices.

This is good news for those of you who plan to utilize the hybrids for work-related activities and not only. Even if the two models are not equipped with digitizes, the upcoming Active Styluses should allow input via an active pen, if you’re willing to throw €40 / $50 to get one (as seen at Tab Tech).

For the time being, we can’t tell you which technology the Active Styluses take advantage of and we’re not exactly clear on how the pens will work with the tablets, given the fact that they are devoid of digitizer support.

The Acer Aspire Active Stylus is made of aluminum and is powered by an AAAA battery. There are two buttons on it, one to be used for deleting contents while the other should help you adjust the pressure point.

We could compare the styluses to the smart pen which work in concert with the Aspire R13 and R7 convertibles, because it seems they have a lot in common.

The pen has been spotted in a listing on Amazon Germany, so owners of the two hybrids can already order a piece if they feel like it.

The styluses won't work with the HD version of the Switch

An enquiry has been sent to Acer asking which models are actually compatible with the new stylus technology and the response has already come back.

According to the company, the new Aspire Active Stylus works only with the Switch 10 FHD and the Switch 11. So the standard HD models are not supported, at least for the time being.

So if you own one of the models listed above and you want to squeeze more productivity out of your convertible, you can now do so by adopting a stylus in your life.
