Global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile ACCESS CO., LTD., along with OKI ACCESS Technologies Co., Ltd., recently announced the launch of a full scale VoIP solution for iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile, namely NetFront IP-Phone. According to the company, the solution comes with 3G and WiFi air interfaces, it has been designed for commercial use by carriers, ISPs and MVNOs, and is expected to become available on the market in June 2010.

“As wireless broadband services and the number of smartphone subscribers continue to grow, VoIP for smartphones has been gaining attention globally both among end users and service providers as an essential part of next generation communications. With the introduction of 3.9G mobile technology and its ability to deliver higher quality voice services, VoIP services will accelerate rapidly. According to market research firm In-Stat, by the end of 2013, the total number of mobile VoIP users worldwide is expected to reach 288 million. In-Stat expects mobile VoIP applications to generate annual revenues of $35.2 billion,” the company notes.

The new NetFront IP-Phone solution includes support air interfaces for 3G and wireless LAN (WiFi) connections. It should offer a standard middleware app and an implementation solution service, while being able to connect with a wide range of IP telephony servers, enabling ISPs and MVNOs to provide VoIP services to smartphone users with reduced costs and development time. The NetFront IP-Phone interface features compliance with 3GPP, OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) and IETF standards.

NetFront IP-Phone is based on the same design concept for all three mobile platforms it supports (iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile). Among the technologies that created the VoIP environment, we can count NetFront IMS Client, along with a standard user interface delivered by Access. The IMS framework deploys a VoIP technology developed by OKI, namely eSound, which can offer higher quality voice communication over IP networks. Future versions of NetFront IP-Phone should include support for more mobile operating systems.

“Thanks to the combination of world-class mobile software from ACCESS, high-quality audio technology from Oki Electric Industry and IMS technologies from OKI ACCESS, we have produced full scale VoIP solution for smartphones,” Tomihisa Kamada, president, CEO and co-founder of ACCESS, commented on the announcement. “We will continue to partner with OKI ACCESS and Oki Electric Industry to that create new multimedia communications business opportunities.”
