Hack used proprietary Apple code, worked much like Redsn0w

The Pwn Dev Team released and then pulled a tethered jailbreak app called Ac1dSn0w which supported iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G and the first-generation iPad under iOS 5.

The tool did pretty much the same thing as the iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w application. However, it provided the jailbreak by using Apple code, which eventually led to its discontinuation:

Musclenerd of the iPhone Dev Team explains on the ModMyi forums:

“Unfortunately they achieve this by directly embedding Apple code in their program (15 times!). That’s the kind of copyright infringement we stay away from. Hosting this app lead to DMCA takedowns, etc. (Anyhow, redsn0w doesn’t need the IPSW for each tethered boot either. It fetches the images from Apple’s servers once and then caches them.)”

Ac1dSn0w was in an early development stage, according to its creators. “In the future it will also be able to jailbreak remote devices,” the people at Pwn Dev Team wrote on their web site. “This means that you just need to install a server program on any OS (Linux, BSD, Windows) and Ac1dSn0w will jailbreak it on a client machine anywhere in the world.”

While they try to work around using Apple code, they’re also planning to implement Custom Firmware Creation and iRecovery Remote - “you can talk to remote devices and send your own payloads etc.”, reads their post.

Unfortunately, neither Ac1dSn0w nor the iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w can provide an untethered jailbreak. Chances are Musclenerd’s crew will have figured it out before Pwn Dev pull their act together.

There’s also progress on the unlock front for iPhone 4S owners. According to a quick tweet by the same Musclenerd, the unlock “in the works” with no ETA. However, the hacks is “promising”, according to the iPhone Dev Team member.
