Chilean developer ACE Team is currently working on Abyss Odyssey, a side-scrolling action adventure game with a combat system that goes way beyond its rather generic title.

The team has released a new video for its upcoming title, detailing how players will be able to customize their avatar's moves, adjusting the game experience to their preference, as well as offering some information on how the entire community's progress will be reflected in every player's experience with the IP.

Abyss Odyssey seems like a big leap forward as far as two-dimensional games go, pushing the genre in uncharted waters and attempting to deliver a unique experience. As such, instead of players having to slash their way through countless waves of weak enemies, encounters will prove more challenging and will focus mainly on 1v1 action.

The upcoming game's combat system relies on many attacks and combos and is more similar to traditional fighting games than to the usual one-button-mashing action seen in side-scrolling titles.

All three main characters have their own fully-customizable skill sets, and players will be able to map the special attacks to the controls in any way they like, as well as augment each attack with buffs that alter the way they function, according to personal preference.

Another innovative concept is the fact that nearly every enemy in the game is playable and has its own move set, and once defeated, players can opt to utilize them to fight their way through the game. Every enemy is as technically complex as the main characters, and there will be no filler foes to breeze through.

Abyss Odyssey is a never-ending, procedurally generated title, but in order to keep players interested in the late game, it will be designed so that when a certain number of players defeat the game's end boss, the nefarious Warlock, he will transition to another form, changing both his appearance as well as fighting style and offering an entirely new challenge until the next form is unlocked.

In addition, the side-scrolling levels will always provide a different experience and will feature life-saving merchants where players can upgrade their stats and gear, as well as unique encounters and treasures.

Abyss Odyssey is currently scheduled to come out this summer as a digital title for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
