I think I suddenly developed a crush on Sarah Jessica Parker! No, I mean it, it's not a joke - OK, almost not a joke. But this lady sure knows how to kick back, and that's always a good thing when you're dealing with Hollywood actresses - especially those actresses who can walk, talk and chew gum at the same time. And yes, I know Sarah hasn't been having an easy life in the industry despite her commercial success - and it all culminated in Maxim magazine appointing her the unsexiest woman of the moment last year and having some stingy comments to go with their choice, calling her "the least sexy woman in a group of very unsexy women" and wondering about how she can still "star on a show with 'sex' in the title". That kind of criticism is easy to write and funny to read - but it takes real brains and creativity to come up with a suitable reply. Not to mention some serious guts.
Sarah Jessica Parker did an interview with Allure magazine, and get this: not only is she making the Maxim people eat their words, but she's doing it in style. She's not stating left, right and center that she is in fact beautiful in a special way and the rest of the world just doesn't understand - but questions the overall preferences of men as far as Hollywood women go, pointing out a very logical and sensible thing: that most of the women we see in movies, on TV and in magazines are unreal-looking and fake anyway. "My impression is that what they[men] find sexy doesn't make them interesting or unusual or special. That makes them common" she says.
Parker confesses that when she first found out she topped Maxim's list of unsexy women, it didn't leave her indifferent. "My God - I'm the unsexiest woman in the world" she admits saying to herself. "My instinct was that it felt personal. It was really about: 'We don't like her'. Who were the judges and critics? I would like to ask them: 'What exactly is it that you personally find not sexy about me? Is it my figure? Is it my brain that bothers you?… That's the beauty of this country - we can have different opinions and coexist and be amused by each other and hurt and offended" she explains. Well, at least she's not being too bitter about the whole thing - and in the long run, is it really such a big deal to be considered unsexy? It sure didn't seem to bother Robert Downey Jr or Matthew Broderick, for once. Well, what can I say - in the end, it's for every one of us to decide what "sexy" and "unsexy" is - so, what do you think on this one?
