14 DAY TRIAL // Symantec and AVG Technologies have announced that their retiring some of their products. AVG will no longer offer the LiveKive backup service, while Symantec will retire its Network Access Control (NAC) solution.
AVG has decided to discontinue AVG LiveKive because of the low usage level. Starting with April 9, 2014, users will no longer be able to upload new files to their accounts. Customers can download the files they want to keep until July 7, 2014.
The next day, on July 8, all files will be deleted permanently. The company says no other products or services are affected by the decision to discontinue LiveKive.
“We have a number of core protection, performance and privacy products that we find are consistently popular with our customers. We also offer some complementary products in other areas for which we evaluate whether to continue updating on an ongoing basis based on the levels of usage. This is unfortunately the case with AVG LiveKive,” AVG explained.
LiveKive users have a lot of similar services to choose from. The list includes Microsoft’s OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive), Google Drive, IDrive, Mozy, Bitcasa and Dropbox.
Symantec, on the other hand, has announced end-of-life, end-of-availability and end-of-support for NAC 12.1 because the company considers that standalone NAC solutions are no longer needed.
They’re no longer needed as much as they used to be due to the fact that most network hardware providers have integrated access control technology into their devices. The growth of the bring-your- own-device (BYOD) trend has also been a factor in the decision.
Symantec says the discontinuation of NAC will free up valuable resources, allowing the company to focus more on its endpoint offering.
The impacted products are Network Access Control, Network Access Control Starter Edition, and Network Access Control Enforcer with 6100 Series Appliance.
“Moving forward, Host Integrity, a feature of Symantec Network Access Control, will be integrated into a future release of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP). Customers who have SEP entitlement can continue to use the Host Integrity feature,” Symantec noted.
March 3 marked the start of limited support for the aforementioned products. The last day on which the solutions can be ordered is September 3, 2014.
Limited support ends on November 5, 2017. This is the date until which technical support and content updates will be available for customers with Basic Maintenance Support or Essential Support. The quantity and frequency of these updates will decrease over time.
