Good news for Windows Phone 8 owners who are worried about the security of their handsets, as AVG has just released a new version of its security solution for Microsoft’s mobile platform.

Dubbed AVG Family Safety, the application was previously available only on Apple devices and smartphones powered by Windows Phone 7.5. However, starting this week, Windows Phone 8 users can download AVG Family Safety on their devices as well.

According to AVG Technologies, the application is one of the best when it comes to protecting children while they surf the web on mobile devices.

AVG Family Safety is a secure mobile web browser, which adds to the current built-in mobile security that is now provided by Microsoft.

It uses data from the developer’s Linkscanner technology in order to block malicious websites. The application’s filters can also prevent visits to any sites that have been confirmed to contain mature and inappropriate content.

“Parents today know only too well the fascination that smartphones hold for children. I am sure that we’ve all been guilty in the past of handing over our device, with our only concern being about its safety rather than the safety of our children using it. AVG Family Safety gives parents that peace of mind,” said Tony Anscombe, AVG’s senior security evangelist.

There’s more to it, as AVG Family Safety has been especially developed for use in the Windows Phone 8 Kid’s Corner, a new feature that allows parents to set up an area on their devices where children can play with preloaded games, apps, music, and videos, but can’t access the content or apps stored on the rest of the phone.

AVG Family Safety 3.0.0.0 is now available as a free download via Windows Phone Store and it should be fully compatible with all devices running Windows Phone 8 and up. Check it out here.
