The company announced yesterday two new media processors: IMAGEON 2282 and IMAGEON 2182, both with excellent media features, allowing a phone to be transformed into a full high resolution digital camera, a high-fidelity audio player or a streaming/video conferencing camcorder.

The two IMAGEON processors are full 3GPP (3G Partnership Project) compatible and can deliver a very high degree of quality independent to the main
processor of the phone. 3G Partnership Project seeks mobile technology compatibility and interoperability, as mobile phones to be able to operate both on GSM/GPRS and 3G networks.

According to ATI, important mobile phone manufacturers already showed interest to integrate the new solutions in their products, but no names have been mentioned.

The list of the IMAGEON clients includes top names, such as Motorola, LG and Fujitsu.

The new processors will offer support for the majority of audio formats (AAC, AMR, Real Audio, WMA, MIDI etc.). The phones will also be able to act as digital stereo recorders.

Both processors will be able to support digital cameras of up to 3 Megapixel, the quality of video recording and playing being comparable to that of dedicated digital video cameras.

IMAGEON 2282 will offer (additionally, compared to its little brother) videostreaming and picture-in-picture conference features. Both processors are based on ATI's power management technology PowerPlay, which ensures an excellent autonomy for mobile devices.
