14 DAY TRIAL // Advanced Micro Devices, or AMD, announced on December 17th a new version of its versatile ATI Catalyst proprietary Display Driver for Linux users. The new ATI Catalyst 9.12 Display Driver is, as usual, available for both x86 and x86_64 architectures and it updates the software to version 8.681. ATI Catalyst 9.12 also introduces support for the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3 and RedFlag DT 6.0 SP3.
However, it appears that ATI Catalyst 9.12 brings some user interface enhancements for its Linux users. Therefore, the ATI Catalyst Control Center for Linux includes new features, such as:
CRT/VGA settings: · New HDTV page; · New Size and Position page.
TV settings: · New option for "Automatic setting for Size and Position adjustment;" · New image quality settings: "S-Video/Composite sharpness" and "flicker removal."
Component Video settings: · New Scaling Options page – new Underscan / Overscan controls; · New custom mode support for 576 modes.
Support for display projectors: · Enables quick display configuration of display projectors.
Resolved issues in ATI Catalyst 9.12:
· If the desktop resolution is changed via the Catalyst Control Center, it will be applied when the X server is restarted; · The display is now mapped to the right screen/desktop, in Catalyst Control Center, after the X server restarts; · Display corruption will no longer occur when an XRandR command is executed in dual-head mode, on the first display.
Once again, lots of known issues remain unresolved for this release of the ATI Catalyst suite!
Requirements:
· X.Org 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 or 7.4; · Linux kernel 2.6 or higher; · glibc version 2.2 or 2.3; · Support for POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) is necessary for 3D programs; · The following packages should be installed on your system: XFree86-Mesa-libGL, libstdc++, libgcc, XFree86-libs, fontconfig, freetype, zlib and gcc.
Also, please note that 64-bit users must have the 32-bit libraries installed before executing/updating the driver! Moreover, a GCC compiler, kernel-headers and kernel-source are required to build the modules and to enable 2D and 3D acceleration.
