ATI Catalyst 10.8 Driver Leaks Southern Islands HD 6000 Codenames

ATI just released the latest graphics driver, ATI Catalyst 10.8, and while some may not have expected it, this release actually carried a very specific piece of information, namely the complete list of codenames for the HD 6000 Series of GPUs, otherwise known as Southern Islands.

By now, end-users may know that Advanced Micro Devices will soon unleash a new line of graphics processing units (GPUs) as part of the Radeon HD 6000 series of video cards.

These newcomers will be based on the 40nm manufacturing process and will, obviously, be superior to the current generation of HD 5000.

Unfortunately, until just a short time ago, very little information was known on just what GPUs and cards would surface, or what they would be known as.

Now, with the newest release of the ATI Catalyst driver suite, the list of Southern Islands codenames has finally surfaced, with a total of 35 new products being listed in the atiicdxx.da_ file.

This is definitely a significant revelation but, unfortunately, there are no real details of any sort on the cards or the performance of either newcomer.

Still, the list at least points out which GPUs the consumer base should expect, namely the Barts, Cayman, Blackomb, Antilles and Whistler.
