It is only available via LG update utility desktop software

It’s been quite a while since LG deployed the Gingerbread update for Optimus 3D. When everyone thought Gingerbread for LG Thrill will never come, the handset maker decided to release the software through its official channels.

Starting today, AT&T customers who own the LG Thrill 4G can upgrade their smartphones to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system.

However, the update doesn’t arrive via AT&T’s airwave, instead users are required to download and install LG Mobile Support Tool, a utility desktop software that enables synchronization between a PC and the smartphone.

Unfortunately, LG’s desktop software is a bit unstable, so users might have to try a few times before being able to download and install the Gingerbread update. Keep in might that the software might not work well on some platform, such as Windows Vista.

Although LG has yet to make it official and release a changelog for the major update, several users who already flashed the Gingerbread update noticed the following changes:

- improved Android keyboard; - different notification bar (color and icons); - more bloatware has been added; - 2D to 3D game convertor; - the flash on the back cover now works with 3D camera; - new Video Editor; - supports improved data transfer speeds (now 21Mbps from 14.4Mbps).

Obviously, aside from the changes mentioned above, Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread bring LG Thrill 4G other bug fixes, new features, UI tweaks, as well as improvements and enhancements.

In other news, LG already confirmed plans to deliver an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Optimus 3D by the end of the year.

Even though AT&T’s LG Thrill 4G has yet to be scheduled for an Android 4.0 upgrade, it’s likely that the handset make might evaluate this possibility and will make it happen in a not-so-distant future (hopefully). Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
