Mobile phone carrier AT&T should soon make available for purchase on its airwaves a new handset running under Google's Android operating system and offering fast access to social networking, namely the HTC Status.

This device is none other than the HTC ChaCha smartphone that was unveiled to the world in February during the Mobile world congress, but which got a different branding for the North American continent, it seems.

Yesterday, Canadian wireless operator Telus announced the availability of HTC Status on its airwaves in the near future, which confirmed previous rumors on its rebranding to HTC Status.

While things were already made official as far as Canadian mobile phone users are involved, the same does not apply to the United States, even if Status should make an appearance in this market as well.

AT&T is the wireless services provider which was already rumored to plan the release of HTC's ChaCha Facebook phone on the market in the United States, and it seems that it might not be too long before it makes the move.

No specific info on what was changed in regard to HTC Status' specifications has emerged so far, but we should expect for the device to include the same specs and capabilities as the European flavor of the phone, that's for sure.

Thus, it will arrive on the market with a touchscreen display on the front, complemented by a QWERTY keyboard, and the much-praised dedicated Facebook button, which offers users the possibility to share content or status updates with a single touch.

The Facebook phone packs an 800MHz application processor and a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, as well as a microSD memory card slot, 3G connectivity, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS receiver, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The mobile phone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and offers support for various services from the company, as well as for applications available via the Android Market.

AT&T has yet to announce the availability of this handset on its airwaves, as well as info on the release date and pricing. Until that happens, have a look at the HTC Status photos available from BGR.
