After the initial hiccups with activation and the data network, it looks like AT&T has been trying to get a feel for how happy iPhone customers are, through a questionnaire. Last week, the company began sending a survey to some iPhone customers asking them to rate various aspects of their iPhone experience
with the EDGE network.
The performance of the EDGE data network has been discussed a lot but it is not the important thing here, the questionnaire is. In one section the survey asks customers to rate the EDGE network when using various iPhone "applications". Interestingly enough, in the applications listed there is iChat and the iPhone definitely does not have that.
Many are speculating whether this is AT&T testing the water and hinting at a future software update that will add iChat to the applications available on the iPhone.
While iChat is definitely one of the most wanted missing applications, in the case of this survey this is probably nothing more than just a simple error. Amongst the applications for which AT&T asks for feedback there are Stocks, Weather, YouTube, and 'Search.' Again, there is no 'Search' application, the only thing that comes close is Safari's ability to search the web via search web sites such a Google, but that is something else entirely.
Another possibility is that the person responsible for writing the questionnaire has little idea about the iPhone and is confusing the SMS interface with iChat because of the common 'balloon' look. It may sound absurd, but this would not be the first person that simply saw the interface and jumped to the conclusion that it is iChat.
While iChat remains one of the most wanted iPhone application, this survey is not likely to be a leak on AT&T's part. If anything this is just a poorly made survey by someone that obviously did not understand the iPhone's features.
