14 DAY TRIAL // It seems that this is the "update day", as two US major carriers announced software updates for some of their flagship smartphones: Motorola Droid X, Samsung Fascinate and Samsung Captivate.
The last on the list, AT&T has announced a little while ago that it will start to push OTA a minor update for its Samsung Galaxy S smartphone version, the Captivate.
Unfortunately, Samsung Captivate won't receive any Android 2.2 treat, as the Droid X is getting, instead, the software update will fix some bugs and will come up improvements and apps.
AT&T officially stated that this is not an operating system update, but it will change software version from I897UCJF6 to I897UCJH7.
The update has 12MB started to be pushed since yesterday and will continue Tuesday through Friday at 15,000 customers per day until complete.
I897UCJH7 firmware update includes the following software updates:
Preinstalled software - QuickOffice for Android will allow users to edit various Microsoft Office documents. Messaging - Exchange 2003 support, MMS and other messaging enhancements. Voice - Improved calling experience. Media - media scanning time improvements.
Further, it seems that the update is not intended to solve various reset or freezing issues experienced by users, which may be caused by corrupted files, device memory becoming filled and leaving insufficient room to run applications, or use of incompatible third-party applications on the Samsung Captivate.
If the update window doesn't pop-up on your screen from various reasons, you can manually go and check if there's an update available for your Samsung Captivate.
Don't forget to charge the battery, remove the SIM card and backup your data before doing the software update.
To check for an update simply go to Menu / Settings / Software update and click on the Check for Update option, then press OK.
Depending on the size of the update it may take a while before you will be able to use the smartphone again.
