It's been a very long wait, but it seems that Samsung Captivate owners on AT&T's network can finally have a taste of the Android 2.2 Froyo update that was promised for them several months ago. The mobile phone carrier officially announced the move via Facebook, and said that the software update will start to roll out as soon as today.

“Great news for Samsung Captivate owners! The Android 2.2 upgrade is coming tomorrow! We’ll post a link here to the Samsung site with instructions to install the upgrade tomorrow,” AT&T announced on Wednesday.

The wireless carrier also posted a video with AT&T Android Senior Project Manager Dante Martin answering questions about the Android updates various devices would taste in the near future.

One of these handsets would be the HTC Aria. According to AT&T, the software update would arrive on it very soon.

While nothing is certain on the exact availability of the Android 2.2 upgrade for Aria, Samsung Captivate users should start receiving their share of the upgrade in a few hours, so keep an eye on this space for more info on the matter.

In the meantime, we should note that the software update was promised for the first time back in fall 2010, but its release was delayed quite a lot.

Samsung started in the fourth quarter of the last year to deliver the software update to Galaxy S owners out there, but US devices were left behind.

A few weeks ago, wireless carrier T-Mobile started to deliver the software update to its Samsung Vibrant users, and it started arriving on Samsung Epic 4G devices on Sprint's airwaves this week.

What remains to be seen is when Samsung Fascinate would taste the OS upgrade on Verizon Wireless' network, and when other Galaxy S smartphones released in the United States would enjoy the upgrade too.
