It might help Nokia regain some of the market share it lost lately

Sales of Nokia’s new Lumia 900 smartphone have been great at AT&T during the first week of availability, the wireless carrier confirmed again.

The smartphone generated a lot of hype before arriving in stores, and has managed to become a top seller right from the start.

On Monday (in fact, it was released on Sunday, but AT&T’s stores were closed on that day), the Windows Phone handset became the No. 1 selling smartphone at the carrier’s partners, a clear indicator of its strong debut.

Apparently, AT&T is content with the initial sales. Paul Roth, AT&T’s president of retail sales and service, told the Wall Street Journal that Lumia 900 sales exceeded expectations.

The Cyan flavor of the mobile phone appears to have been more popular than the Black version, though some stores sold out their entire Lumia 900 stock quite fast.

The phone arrived on shelves with a $99 (around 75 Euro) price tag with the signing of a two-year contract agreement, and went down to only $49 (37 Euro) at Amazon.

The device also drew a lot of attention over a data connection issue it was found to have been plagued with, which found a quick fix from Nokia: the company will deliver a software update for it, along with $100 of credit to users’ bills to offset the inconvenience.

All in all, it appears that Nokia is indeed set to make things right with Lumia 900, to ensure that the device lives up to the expectations.

One thing that is certain is that the company does need to do so. Sales of both Symbian and Windows Phone devices have been sluggish in the first three months of the year, and Nokia’s financial results have been greatly impacted, as the company confirmed a few days ago.

2012 is expected to mark a turning point for the Finnish company, allowing it to regain its foothold on the smartphone market, courtesy of highly appealing devices, though it could also turn out to be disastrous for the company, if it cannot deliver to its promises.

Although no specific numbers have been offered for the time being, Lumia 900 is said to have enjoyed a strong enough launch to allow the company to hope for more.
