AT&T wireless account holders were targeted by a hacking operation that relied on automatic scripts to find phone numbers that that were linked to online accounts.

According to The Register, only 1% of the company's subscribers were targeted and even if the malevolent operations remained unsuccessful, all the individuals involved received a notification from AT&T as a precaution.

“The people in question appear to have used 'auto script' technology to determine whether AT&T telephone numbers were linked to online AT&T accounts,” reads a statement from the company.

“No accounts were breached and our investigation is ongoing to determine the source or intent of the attempt to gather this information.”

Fortunately, this time their security measures were up and running at full capacity, but experts stress that customer privacy may be at risk if AT&T's systems allow for someone to determine if certain phone numbers are linked to online accounts.
