US iPhone carrier AT&T has released a press statement to confirm that pre-loaded video chat apps, such as FaceTime, will be allowed to use cellular airwaves by mid-June.

The operator currently gives all OEMs the ability support their built-in chat apps with cellular connectivity, but only as long as the user is on Mobile Share or Tiered plans.

Come June, all that will change. Three of the largest smartphone vendors, including Apple, “have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps,” reports AT&T.

“And by mid-June, we’ll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers,” says the company.

AT&T plans to enable pre-loaded video chat apps throughout the second half of the year, “regardless of data plan or device.” Some AT&T users are already reporting that FaceTime-over-Cellular works.

FaceTime-over-Cellular can be enabled by opening the Settings app and navigating to FaceTime > Use Cellular Data.
