Wireless carrier AT&T has announced today the launch of additional wireless spectrum in the 850 MHz band meant to enhance its 3G network coverage in and around Atlanta. According to the company, the addition of the new spectrum increases the network capacity and enables it to meet the growing demand for 3G mobile broadband services. All users in the metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas such as parts of Fulton, DeKalb, North Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Fayette Counties will benefit from the new network enhancement.

According to the mobile phone operator, the new enhancements come as part of its attempt to expand and increase its network. The existing 1900 MHz spectrum has been leveraged with the addition of 850 MHz spectrum across over 540 cell sites in the area. According to the company, the new improvements will affect the network capacity across more than 3,800 square miles.

“Our mission is to connect people with their world, everywhere they live and work, and to do it better than anyone else,” said Sylvia Russell, president, AT&T Georgia. “This substantial network upgrade is part of our commitment to deliver the nation's fastest 3G connectivity along with the highest possible levels of service quality and reliability.”

The 850 MHz spectrum, AT&T says, is one of the best available at the moment. The carrier's users should experience better quality for their services, as well as improved coverage. According to the carrier, significant improvements in the total 3G data traffic have been spotted in the areas where the spectrum has already been rolled out.

“Atlanta consistently ranks as one of the most technology-savvy cities, and investments in technology and broadband continue to position our region for success. We are truly becoming a national hotbed for technology innovation and investment,” said Sam A. Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue commented, “By enhancing existing networks and bringing innovative communications technologies to Georgia, AT&T is helping position our state to be a leader as the economy recovers.”
