As part of its larger “One Million Eco Challenge” project meant to raise environmental awareness among youth, AT&T launched an Eco application, which is now available on the App Store.

The “mobile green” software provides a tool for users to find information about recycling items, donate to the Arbor Day foundation, receive eco tips, event information, and other eco specific content.

Once downloaded and installed on any iOS device, the application enables users to locate recycling facilities in their local area. The main feature of the application, finding the nearest recycler, is powered by 1800recycling.com.

If you have a broken microwave or a dozen of worn down rechargeable batteries that are starting to pile up in your apartment, the Eco App can help you pinpoint where to recycle batteries, electronics, furniture, and many more.

Eco App also provides users with the option to donate through the “Reforestation and Watch it Grow” feature. AT&T is actively working with the Arbor Day Foundation and plans to have a tree planted for every customer who opts-in to paperless billing in 2010.

The carrier hopes to be able to plant up to 1 million trees this year, and to measure progress toward this goal users of Eco App can check out the “Counter” feature, which outlines the actual stage of the project.

Through the “Donation” tab included in the software, users can make secure, credit card-based donations to the Arbor Day Foundation. The foundation will use the amount donated to plant trees according to the sum received.

Arbor Day Foundation and AT&T are planning to provide users of the application with bi-monthly updates, as well as other informative news about environmental awareness, such as eco tips and event info.

Eco App is fully compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad devices that are running iOS 3.0 or later and requires 9.7 MB storage space. It can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
