One of the biggest drawbacks of today's low-cost, low-power portable computer systems, also known as netbooks, is that they can't provide their users with an integrated optical drive. However, this is where external optical drives come into play, as they can provide additional functionality for these small-sized, low-power portable computer systems. One such device comes from ASUS, which has recently introduced a new external optical drive, providing users with a slim and fashionable design.

ASUS is a world-renowned manufacturer of a series of products, including computer peripherals, optical drives and also netbooks. The latest SDRW-08D1S-U comes to complete the company's range of optical drives. The new DVD Writer has been designed so that users of both desktop and portable computer systems can take advantage of its features, as it comes in an external product. In addition, the SDRW-08D1S-U comes with a sleek and slim design, which will definitely meet the aesthetics requirements of most users.

The optical drive can easily be connected to a computer system via a USB 2.0 connector. It features a maximum read and write speed of 8x for DVDs, and a random access time of 150ms. ASUS's drive can burn CDs at a speed of 24x, while the random access time for CDs is featured at 130ms. In addition to its technical specifications, the drive will also provide its users with bundled CyberLink software, meant to make DVD/CD burning a lot easier.

The SDRW-08D1S-U can be mounted both vertically and horizontally, offering more management options. When it becomes available, the drive will provide ASUS' customers with a choice of either black or white coloring. The company is yet to provide details on the pricing of the new SDRW-08D1S-U.
