ASUS is still months away from launching its next flagship

ASUS unveiled its latest flagship smartphone back at CES 2015 as the ZenFone 2. The handset was actually the first one to be announced with 4GB of RAM onboard, and surprisingly it got a pretty inexpensive price tag to go with it.

The 4GB of RAM model hasn’t been made available in the US yet, but in China, ASUS is selling this particular model for $285 / €263 a pop.

Interestingly enough, even as ASUS has yet to make the phone available on a wider scale, word about the company’s upcoming flagship has already surfaced online, just three months after ZenFone 2’s launch.

ASUS’ CEO Jerry Shen himself talked to the Chinese press and revealed part of his vision related to the upcoming top-tier phone.

ASUS looking to adopt fingerprint recognition tech for its flagships

It seems that ASUS is looking to conform itself to the rigors of the market, so their future ZenFone 3 will apparently bundle a fingerprint recognition technology.

That’s obviously pretty good news, but given the fact that the ZenFone 2 is barely three months old, we have a lot of time before the ZenFone 3 actually comes out.

On the bright side, if you’re already fantasizing about having fingerprint technology on your ASUS handset, you’ll be pleased to know that the company is planning a refresh of its current flagship which will add the technology. We can expect to see such a model grace us with its presence in the second half of 2015.

We’re not being told what sort of fingerprint sensor will be embedded in the ZenFone 2, but chances are the phone will come equipped with technology similar to what we’ve seen in the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6.

As for the ASUS ZenFone 3, the flagship will make an appearance sometimes in 2016 bundling some sort of biometric scanning technology, although details are pretty sketchy at the moment.

But while we wait for ASUS to launch these models, your attention might be grabbed by the competition.

For example, OnePlus is working on a sequel to their One smartphone and the rumor mill has it that the phone might take advantage of a laser focus fingerprint scanner. The phone is expected in Q3 2015.
