ASUS plans to update more products to Lollipop

This week, we’re getting a lot of new information about ASUS and ASUS products, so here’s one more tidbit for you.

Remember ASUS’ MeMO Pad 7 (ME176) which launched back in 2014 with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box? Well, according to an image posted by ASUS Benelux (region in Europe that comprises Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), the tablet is poised to receive Android 5.0 soon enough.

The tablet launched with a 7-inch LED backlight WXGA display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and a quad-core Intel Atom Z3745 quad-core processor clocked at 1.86GHz and fitted with 1GB of RAM and either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage.

ASUS also offers a 2MP rear camera plus a 0.3MP frontal shooter, if tablet photography is your kind of thing, although the quality of the images won’t probably amount to much.

ASUS announces a surprise move

As you can see, the tablet bundles low-end specifications, so it’s pretty surprising that ASUS is choosing to update this model to Android 5.0 Lollipop. But it’s good news, nevertheless.

ASUS and software updates don’t make for a good marriage. Unlike Motorola and LG, which picked up the Android 5.0 Lollipop update immediately after Google launched it in November 2014, ASUS is barely starting to upgrade some of its models.

A few hours ago, we told you that ASUS was currently pushing Android 5.0 Lollipop for its Zenfone 4, 5 and 6 in the form of an OTA (over-the-air) update. Alternatively, owners of the smartphones can also download the new software build from the company’s official website.

Before you jump to install the new update on your Zenfone 4, 5 or 6, though, let us remind you that Android 5.0 Lollipop doesn’t come with some pre-installed applications, as ASUS itself made it clear. So once you’ve updated, you won’t find the following apps on board: Battery widget, PhotoFrame widget, Movie Studio, Cloud Print, CMClient, Magic Smoke Wallpapers and Google Text-to-Speech.

We don’t know at this point whether the same changes will apply to the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX) when the time comes for the update to become available, but we suppose the manufacturer will let us know if this is the case.
