Apple and Samsung are still top tablet vendors

The tablet market is said to have been slowing down, as more and more slates arrive on the market and flood it beyond control.

But the latest report released by Strategy Analytics indicates a curious trend. Sure, big tablet vendors such as Apple and Samsung still maintain a grasp over the market, but it is the smaller players that are actually driving the growth.

To give you the exact numbers, total tablet shipments across Q3 2014 have reached the 55.2 million unit threshold, a number which translates into a 6% growth from the 52 million year-over-year.

Tablet sales are said to have increased 5% quarter-over-quarter. It’s a rather small, discrete growth, but still this was possible not thanks to Apple and Samsung, but to more modest tablet vendors such as ASUS and Lenovo.

However, the two vendors provided “sufficient product differentiation to drive shipments.”

Lenovo recently unveiled a new lineup of Yoga tablets with Windows and Android and the Yoga 3 Pro convertible, and ASUS has introduced new devices like the VivoTab 8 tablet, which arrives with Windows 8.1 with Bing but doesn't have a smart pen attached to it.

ASUS has also unveiled the Transformer Book TF300FA, a convertible that takes advantage of Intel’s new low cost Core M processor.

With the holiday season coming up, it is expected that their tablet sale figures will be on the rise.
