The company is extending its services to the high-speed storage segment

When we saw that ASUS was ready to launch the RAIDR PCI Express SSD, we commented on how odd it was for the ROG brand (Republic of Gamers) to land on a storage unit of the sort.

What we didn't say was that the oddity stemmed more from the fact that ASUS did not have any SSDs on the market before then.

Yet, with the release of the RAIDR, the company has essentially stated its plans to join the own-brand SSD market.

According to Digitimes, this is definitely happening, though the PC OEM will stick to ROG-branded (and, thus, high-end) models at first.

ASUS may also be using RAIDR as a means to gain an edge in SSD purchasing price negotiations. SSD prices have been fluctuating recently, and ASUS doesn't like it one bit. If it has its own SSDs, it can surrender less ground when ordering third-party models for its laptops and such.
