Early this year, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, ASUS surprised everybody by showcasing a new product that easily drew the attention of users everywhere. The device was built on Intel's increasingly popular Atom platform but, unlike most systems powered by these low-power processors, the Eee Keyboard came as something totally new in the segment. Unfortunately for gadget enthusiasts worldwide, ASUS has so far failed to make this much-hyped peripheral available to the general
public. However, according to the most recent piece of information, the company could be rolling out the Atom-powered system in Q4, with users in Europe said to be able to get one in mid- or late October.
As you most probably already know, the Eee keyboard is designed as a computer-in-a-keyboard device, providing users with the features of Intel's low-power Atom platform. The product is equipped with a 5-inch touchscreen display, capable of a maximum resolution of 800 x 480. Weighing in at just 1.1kg, the Eee keyboard is based on the familiar Intel Atom N270 processor, running at 1.6GHz and coupled with the integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics and 1GB of RAM. Additional features include 16GB or 32GB SSD, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, HDMI output and your basic full-sized keyboard.
ASUS has certainly taken its time with this product, having delayed it a couple of times since it was first showcased at CES. However, it looks like things are still moving along and the Taiwanese company is now planning to roll out the device sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. Expected to reach a starting price point of around 500 Euros, the Eee Keyboard will certainly make an impact on gadget enthusiasts when it will finally be released.
There are still doubts that the Eee Keyboard will be launched in the reported timeframe, but one can only hope that ASUS can manage to roll out the device before the holidays.
