The company will no longer make any tablets featuring that OS

Windows RT sounded like a good idea up until the second half of 2012. In theory, the operating system was supposed to fight Android and Apple iOS on the ARM-powered tablet market and give Microsoft an edge.

Sadly, for Microsoft at least, this didn't happen. In fact, sales of Windows RT tablets have been very poor.

So poor that providers of such tablets are dropping like flies. Or at least, they are dropping Windows RT as if it were something vile.

The latest to abandon Windows RT is ASUS. The company said that "Windows RT has not been very successful" and cost it more than it earned.

From now on, ASUS will only make Windows 8 devices with x86 processors. Backwards compatibility with existing Windows applications will help a lot in that area.
