It looks like ASUS is out in force today, as it decided to try its artistic hand at more than just a new sort of audio solution, having also delivered an external Blu-ray player that combines performance with aesthetics.
Pieces of hardware meant to complement or supplement desktops or laptops have become a common commodity nowadays.
They range from the regular things, like flash drives and portable USB HDDs or SSDs, to less ordinary things, such as USB audio cards.
For those that have trouble believing that last part, ASUS already has the
Xonar U3, a device of that very sort.
Now, the same outfit proved it was not aiming low by unleashing the BW-12D1S-U, “the world’s fastest external 3D Blu-ray writer” that has a ”unique artistic approach to optical media.”
It can burn Blu-ray disks at up to 12X, thanks to the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, whose theoretical maximum throughput is of 5 Gbps.
There is also the Optical Tuning Strategy (OTS) technology, which is said to offer the “best writing quality available” and HD 3D playback of videos.
Additionally, as far as audio goes, Dolby EX is fully supported, as is DTS-HD. Of course, in addition to Blu-ray disks, CDs and DVDs can be scribed as well.
Of course, just the above would not be enough to justify ASUS' claim that the device has that aforementioned unique artistic feel.
That said, natural and architectural forms were used as an inspiration for the case of the newcomer, earning the BW-12D1S-U the Taiwan Excellence Award 2011.
“ASUS Blu-ray devices take a different approach to component design,” says the company. “Unlike generic optical drives, they bring to the fore exciting presentation.”
Finally, a stand allows one to place the product upright or on its side, but nothing is said on pricing and availability.
