Cambridge, England-based ARM has announced today that it has signed two more licensing agreements for its ARM Mali graphics processing units (GPUs), providing mobile devices with high-definition (HD) entertainment and enhanced browsing experience. Two mobile technology providers in Asia, Rockchip and Telechips, have licensed ARM's GPU technology for use in upcoming products, ranging from mobile to various consumer electronics devices.

“These two new licensing agreements demonstrate the growing demand for next-generation graphics expertise amongst semiconductor companies and OEMs in Asia. ARM’s collaborative approach to graphics acceleration solutions, combined with the strength of the Mali range and the reach of the ARM Partner ecosystem, has led to the adoption of Mali GPUs by 22 licensees to-date,” concluded Lance Howarth, general manager, ARM Media Processing Division.

China-based semiconductor developer Rockchip has licensed three ARM technologies in an attempt to enable OEMs to enhanced the quality of graphics and allow complex applications to be played on portable devices without taking their toll on the latter's battery life. The ARM Mali-55 GPU, the ARM926EJ-S processor and the ARM Cortex M3 microcontroller have been made available for use in future generations of mobile phones and portable media players.

The other company to have licensed GPU technology from ARM is Telechips, a Korean-based company that has extended its license of the ARM Mali-200 CPU for its multimedia application processor.

“Extending our relationship with ARM enables us to take further advantage of Mali graphics IP, delivering high performance OpenVG, OpenGL ES 1.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0 compliant mobile and consumer electronics solutions to our customers,” said Jang-Kyu Lee, COO and VP, Telechips. “The Mali-200 GPU brings cutting-edge user interfaces and navigation experiences to devices, fulfilling the increasing demands of consumers.”

The Mali GPU family ranges from the Mali-55, the world's smallest OpenGL ES graphics processor, to the Mali-400 MP, a high-performance embedded multicore GPU IP that supports complex applications at 1080p resolution.
