ARM and MediaTek Inc. announced today the licensing of the ARM Mali-400 MP multi-core graphics processing unit (GPU) for MediaTek's system-on-chip (SoC) technology. MediaTek Inc., as many of you might already know, is a worldwide leading fabless semiconductor company focused on wireless communications and digital multimedia applications. The company is well known for cutting-edge SoC system solutions for DVD and Blu-ray products and high-definition TVs.

The licensing of the ARM Mali-400 MP GPU will offer MediaTek the possibility to boast high graphics performance and rendering while also providing low levels of power consumption. At the same time, the Mali-400 MP technology also comes with the scalability that will enable MediaTek to come to the market with a variety of graphics solutions. “We have chosen to license ARM Mali technology for its scalability and performance credentials. It is vital that we are able to achieve flexibility in our product portfolio,” MediaTek stated.

ARM's graphics IP solutions are widely adopted in the industry, and the company counts 29 licensees, 21 of which are licensees of Mali GPUs. The Mali lineup includes solutions ranging from the Mali-55 GPU to the Mali-400 MP GPU, being able to provide the needed solutions for embedded graphics with a wide range of supported performance points. The Mali GPU family also enables ARM to stand as the supplier of a complete range of hardware and software graphics IPs.

This is not the first time when MediaTek licenses ARM processors, and the previous collaboration between the two companies, combined with the Mali-400 MP GPU, shows that ARM is the choice when it comes to the power-efficient, easily configurable CPU and graphics solutions that it can deliver to the market. It is a common fact that the ARM Connected Community has more than 600 partners, including leading silicon partners, device manufacturers and content providers. All the partners in the community are working on the development of mobile phones and consumer devices that are based on the Mali GPUs.

“MediaTek has a strong record of execution and success in the mobile and digital home market place and we are pleased to be working together to deliver the best graphics technology to meet their customers’ needs,” Lance Howarth, general manager, ARM Media Processing Division, said. “The scalability of the Mali hardware architecture will enable its use in a vast range of MediaTek consumer SoC products.”
