14 DAY TRIAL // Last year Apple launched the iPhone 5S which came with a 64-bit processor, but since then Android smartphones and tablet have struggled to catch up with the standard.
However, in a recent interview conducted by CNET with ARM executive Tom Lantzsch, assures us 64-bit Android tablets will be upon us by Christmas.
“Certainly, we've had big uptick in demand for mobile 64-bit products. We've seen this with our [Cortex] A53, a high-performance 64-bit mobile processor.”
“We've been surprised at the pace that [64-bit] is now becoming mobile centric. Qualcomm, MediaTek and Marvell are examples of public 64-bit disclosures.”
For example, Qualcommis is scheduled to roll out 64-bit Snapdragon 808 and 810 processors in early 2015. For the time being, it’s unknown when a 64-bit version of Android will be released, but it might be possible we will see it arrive on devices such as the Nexus 8 or next-gen Nexus 10.
Lantzsch also added all software will run fast, saying even existing 32-bit code will run more smoothly on ARM’s 64-bit V8-A architecture, compared to the native 32-bit ARM architecture.
Nevertheless, when 64-bit software arrives, products will have to be reshaped, with applications being at the forefront. A new era is coming.
