It is a 15.6-inch LED-backlit LCD with HD resolution

We'd have expected even portable monitors to show support for Full HD content like there's no tomorrow, but AOC must have decided that a lower price was a bit more important here, and that Full HD resolution isn't really needed on a 15.6-inch LCD.

In all fairness, that's actually not such an unlikely assumption. After all, it's not like the naked eye can see much difference between 1366 x 768 pixels and 1920 x 1080 pixels on small monitors.

And a 15.6-inch diagonal definitely qualifies an LCD as small, compared to regular monitors (20 inches on average).

So yet, the new AOC USB monitor has a resolution of “just” 1366 x 768 pixels (LED backlit TFT TN display technology).

The contrast ratio is of 500:1, which is half the normal 1000:1, so you shouldn't expect it to be a wonder of movie playback.

Most likely, AOC came up with the E1659FWU, as the LCD is called, for those that want some extra workspace, for spreadsheets and such.

On that note, the brightness isn't that astounding either, at 200 cd/m2, and the response time of 8 ms isn't stellar.

But that's expected. After all, this is, in the end, a USB display, not one that uses HDMI, DVI or VGA, the interfaces made for video streaming.

And since the USB connection has to power the LCD all on its own, there wasn't really a way to provide better brightness and the like. It would have eaten more energy than would have been available.

Other specs include viewing angles of 50° vertical and 90° horizontal, 16:9 aspect ratio, about 260,002 thousand colors, 8W power draw (1W in standby) and support for Windows and Mac OS. Buyers (14,800 Yen / $150 / €110) can even put it on a wall with a VESA mount.
