AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) will introduce a special brand name for personal entertainment oriented computers running certain chips from the company.
Also, some chipsets from partnered manufacturers will be included in this brand.
AMD's lifetime rival, Intel has already made a similar move.
Intel introduced lately its own brand name for consumer oriented computers,
Intel Viiv.
In order to carry the trademark, the company specified a list of capabilities that a PC should support. Therefore, all Intel Viiv PCs will come with a remote control, with Microsoft's Windows Media Center Edition OS and additional software for enabling the use of a PC similar to a TV. Users will be able to download music and files from the Internet while watching a movie or playing a game, all from one system and using a remote control.
The Head of Sales and Marketing at AMD, Henri Richard, stated that it would come up with a new brand for its digital media platforms in 2006, but did not reveal the name.
What AMD plans to offer to its customers under the new trademark is yet unclear, only the announcement of a new brand being made.
While Intel will begin launching its first
Viiv systems starting the first quarter of 2006, AMD will still have to do some work to catch up.
