AMD Will Launch 2 Barcelona Processors

After the official announcement that the Barcelona based quad core processors will be launched on the 10th of September, several server makers said that the manufacturing company, AMD, will launch two and not one processor. The server intended Barcelona will arrive with the established name of Opteron in the form of a pair designed for two slot machines. Another server intended Barcelona is expected to see the market in

October.

While AMD declined to comment on this news, the site DigiTimes, said that the new processors will be called Opteron 2348 and 2350 and they will run at medium clock speeds of 1.9GHz and 2.0GHz, while their pricing will stay in the range of $320 and $390 in 1000-unit tray quantities. The October processor is said to be a little faster, the Opteron 2354 coming with a running speed of 2.2GHz, a 95W TDP and a bigger $610 price for 1000-unit tray quantities.

Apart from the models 2348, 2350 and 2354, AMD is said to expand the Opteron quad core processors to the following models: 2340, 2350, 2352, 2354, 2356, 2358 and 2360. Among these processors, there will be Opterons running at a default clock speed of more than 2.0GHz, according to an earlier AMD press release. The 8-way server intended chips from the Opteron 8300 processors line will also be launched in the next few months and the line will include the 8348, 8350, 8352, 8354 and 8356 models, according to several server makers that received engineering samples for compatibility testing. While pricing for the Opteron processors from the 8xxx line has not been officially announced, according to some sources they will be in the range of $790 and $1550, when sold in batches of 1000 CPUs.

Even if there is no word yet about the clock speeds of the 83xx family of Opteron processors, they are very likely to be close to the frequencies of similar 23xx processors but with slightly higher thermal ratings. A definitive launch data is not known.
