Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has just announced a number of new processors, coming to complete its latest line of six-core Opteron chips, formerly codenamed Istanbul. These new models have been designed to provide customers with a choice for a high-performance processor that can also improve the energy efficiency of their high-end systems. There are five new models, in AMD's 6-core lineup, with three aimed at 2P servers, while the other two have been designed for 4P/8P servers.

“Since our initial introduction of multi-core processors for the server market, it’s been the AMD mission to help IT managers reduce datacenter energy costs without compromising performance,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server Business, AMD. “These new lower power Six-Core AMD Opteron processors feature the highest performance-per-watt that we have brought to market, and help drive down power consumption while addressing the shifting cloud and Web landscape of today’s datacenter. And with six cores of compute power and Direct Connect Architecture, these processors deliver no-compromise performance.”

AMD's new lineup includes the Opteron 2439 SE, a 2.8GHz processor that comes with a TDP of 105 watts, the 2425 HE, clocked at 2.1GHz and featuring a TDP of 55 watts, and the 2423 HE, featuring a frequency of 2.0GHz and 55 watts, all of which have been designed for 2P servers. In addition, for 4P/8P servers, AMD also announced the availability of the two models, the Opteron 8425 HE, clocked at 2.1GHz and 55 watts TDP, and the new flagship, the Opteron 8439 SE, clocked at 2.8GHz and with TDP 105 watts.

As far as pricing goes, the new chips will be available for prices ranging from US$455 for the Opteron 2423 HE to US$2649 for the company's new flagship, the Opteron 8439 SE. According to AMD, the new 6-core SE processors can deliver about 50% performance improvement over its quad-core SE models.
