Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has just announced the availability of a new beta plug-in for the Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 application, designed to further enhance performance on a range of video editing tasks. The company's new plug-in comes as the fruit of a collaboration between the chip maker and the software developer to enable said application to take advantage of the ATI Stream technology to allocate processing between the system's CPU and GPU, consequently enabling an increased overall performance for video editing. With the addition of this new plug-in, AMD follows NVIDIA in providing support to software developers trying to optimize their applications on the GPU.

Designed to meet the requirements of graphics enthusiasts who need to create enhanced video, audio and interactive media, the new Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 takes full advantage of the latest developments in the hardware industry. Its latest plug-in comes to add support for AMD's ATI Stream technology, which has been designed to provide access to the parallel computing performance enabled by the company's latest graphics processing units. In essences, ATI Stream is AMD's response to NVIDIA's CUDA and enables GPUs to be used for more than just graphics.

According to the release notes, the new AMD Encoder Plug-in features the following:

Accelerated encoding to MPEG-2 format with MPEG-2 video and LPCM or MPEG-2 layer 2 audio formats within Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Accelerated encoding to H.264 format with H.264 video and AAC audio format within Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. The AMD Encoder Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 has not been tested on every possible hardware combination available on the market today. Beta release testing was performed using AMD Phenom tm processors, AMD 6xx and 7xx chipsets, and ATI Radeon tm 4800 Series GPU family products.

The new ATI Stream Encoder Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 is available for download here, where AMD also encourages its customers to use the plug-in and provide the team with feedback for future versions of the tool. Before downloading the plug-in you'll be required to participate in a short survey, but you can skip that and download it directly from Softpedia.
