If you think that the new quad cores from AMD will only be offered as a server solution…think again. Maybe the new CPUs from AMD won't be a match for INTEL's Kentsfield project and it's a sure thing that they will consume almost twice as much as their counterparts coming from
Santa Clara manufacturer. However, AMD proved that it can build an air cooled PC using its latest quad core experiment. And the guys from The Inquirer were there to see it.
Presented in Austin, the new beast is pretty normal when coming to how it looks like to the untrained eye. Only by looking at the 30 inch monitor coming from Dell you would realize what power lies in a normal desktop case. What I'm talking here comes to this: imagine a PC running at the same time 2 copies of "City of Heroes", 2 HD movies played on loop and even 1 HD movie on encoding process and you'll get the idea.
Unfortunately, AMD cannot beat INTEL in the quad core arena, at least not with this revision. Agena based CPU may change that. But that's not the point. Here and now AMD proves it can do a lot of multi-threading which runs as smooth as ever using this new quad core. And that's exactly where its latest CPU might be of great use, since AMD platform favors high bandwidth applications running simultaneously. A test between this CPU and Kentsfield will be quite a show-off. Until then, you can be sure that a quad core on air will not melt. I hope Kentsfield can also do without water cooling.
