The company is more than confident in its manufacturing power

AMD shared a few more details about its near future, confirming that it's ready to supply more than enough components to Sony and Microsoft for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next-gen consoles, and that it's still quite dedicated to the PC market.

AMD scored a big win in terms of the next generation of consoles, as hardware from the company is powering both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

"It is a very, very proud moment," AMD's Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Semi-Custon Business, Saeid Moshkelani, told GI.

"They are very complex projects, very complex designs, and it doesn't happen overnight. It has been a journey of over two years in development to get to today."

These big partnerships have led to some doubt over whether or not the company can deliver enough components to not impede the manufacturing of the two consoles. This, however, isn't a problem according to Moshkelani.

"From a manufacturing perspective, in a year we ship tens of millions of units," he replied. "So we have a very strong manufacturing base for our APUs and discrete graphics. We leverage the same manufacturing infrastructure to develop for game consoles. So the volumes were not something that actually raised an eyebrow for us, because we're already in high-volume manufacturing."

Even with the new dedication towards consoles, Moshkelani emphasizes that the PC is still a crucial market for AMD and that it will continue to work with developers to optimize titles for AMD hardware.

"We are working with all of the major developers for PC games, as part of our strategy for PC products. It enables the developers to optimize their games on PCs by working with us. And then at some point, they can port those to consoles. Historically, the consoles were all different architecture. Porting from PC to PowerPC architecture was not as easy. AMD makes it much easier to port games back and forth."

The company emphasized the fact that both next-gen consoles are powered by AMD will make things much easier for game developers to port their titles onto PCs powered by similar hardware.
