Even though the GPUs aren't the same, they are similar enough for this

Despite there being few people who bother getting more than one graphics card for their gaming rigs, AMD seems to consider CrossFire technology very important, as this latest revelation again shows.

Said revelation is about the compatibility between AMD's Radeon R9 280X graphics card and the Radeon HD 7900 series.

The folks at HardwareCanucks were able to run a combo setup involving the R9 280X and the HD 7970 graphics adapter.

Presumably, the same should be possible with the R9 270X and the HD 7870 based on Pitcairn, not Tahiti LE. The HD 7950 should be eligible for such combinations as well.

Sadly, since the Radeon R9 290/290X boards rely on a new GPU, they won't be able to collaborate with previous-generation adapters in this matter. Unless AMD pulls a miracle out of Hammerspace anyhow.
