Right on cue (as the rumors hitting the web over the past few indicated), AMD has gone official with its long-awaited (and heralded) dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990 graphics card, that not boldly targets the world's fastest GPU title.

To be perfectly honest, AMD's announcement doesn't really come as much of a surprise, given the fact that just about all of the card's features and specs were pretty much known (or at least rumored) in advance, via numerous leaks.

But those of you who've not really followed this topic closely should know that we're talking about a graphics solution featuring twin graphics cores, in the TeraScale 3 Unified Processing Architecture, that sports no less than 3072 Stream Processors, 192 Texture Units, 128 Z/Stencil ROP Units as well as 64 Color ROP Units.

The card has quite an impressive offering in the field of memory as well, since it packs 4GB of GDDR5 Memory clocked at 1250MHz, as well as a 320 GB/s maximum memory bandwidth.

Additional features worth mentioning include the Enhanced-Quality Anti-Aliasing (EQAA) and Morphological Anti-Aliasing (MLAA) technologies, as well as AMD's EyeSpeed and Unified Video Decoder 3 (UVD3) technologies.

It's also quite important to mention that, similar to the previous Radeon HD 6900 series cards, the new AMD Radeon HD 6990 actually packs a dual-BIOS toggle switch, that enables users to safely opt either for the standard BIOS version (up to 830MHz Engine Clock, 5.10 TFLOPs Single Precision compute power and 1.27 TFLOPs Double Precision Compute Power) or for the overclocked BIOS (clock pushed at 880 Mhz, while the computing power is also enhanced).

Naturally, the device also supports the now famous EyeFinity multi-monitor tech, while also coming equipped with both DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a video connectors.

Last, but certainly not least, we'll have to mention that the base price for AMD's dual-GPU monster is quite “monstrous” as well, given the fact that the Radeon HD 6990 sells for around 700 US dollars.
