Typically, whenever a GPU manufacturer is getting ready to out a brand-new generation of graphics cards, the previous generation models receive a price cut (more or less hefty, depending on the specific partner), and that's exactly what seems to be happening right now, since we're already seeing the Radeon HD 5870 being available at a slightly lower price point. So, as Hexus reports, it seems that the former AMD Radeon flagship model, the Radeon HD 5870, has already received a very serious price cut, being available online for as low as 190 pounds sterling (or roughly 300 US dollars), a 44.50 pounds sterling price cut, which is really hefty, all things considered.

However, we're not talking here about a general price cut, this offering applying to a single model, namely the XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB graphics card.

What's important to mention, though, is the fact that we might actually be talking just about the first in a long line of AMD partners that will provide their cards at discounted price points.

The reason for this move is, as mentioned before, the imminent launch of the next-generation Radeon HD 6900 series graphics cards, which have already been delayed far too long by AMD, but also the fact that, no later than tomorrow, we'll see the market being filled to the brink with brand-new GeForce GTX 570 graphics cards, that will target more or less the same market segment the 5870 is going for right now.

For the time being, it's still rather difficult to estimate which side will emerge victorious from the late-2010 GPU war, which has really heated up compared to the previous year, for example, but we certainly hope that consumers will be the ultimate winners, since they'll hopefully manage to get the latest and best graphics card at some price points that won't drill a permanent hole in their bank accounts.
