AMD announced yesterday the release of the first energy efficient quad-core processor, the AMD Phenom X4 9100e. Using an energy-conscious design, AMD managed to build a desktop CPU that needs only 65-watts to operate. The computing capabilities and user's experience are not diminished, but high performance is delivered through the use of this processor.

Consumers are given an efficient PC platform by AMD through the combination between an 780 series motherboard and an AMD Phenom X4 9100e quad-core processor.
Multimedia enthusiasts and casual gamers can enjoy high level experience with a system that is able to play Blu-ray movies and supports resource demanding applications. The combination is ideal for consumers seeking for a quiet energy-efficient PC that features multi-tasking capabilities. It allows downloading video or audio files from the web while sending emails and compiling digital content files.

As Greg White, corporate vice president and general manager, desktop and embedded division, AMD said, AMD is a leader in green-computing. The company is interested in using the energy-conscious design into all AMD fields, so the AMD Phenom X4 9100e CPU is another product that will help consumers reduce energy consumption. "Energy-efficient processors from AMD not only enable differentiated solutions, but are extremely conducive to smaller and sleeker form factors like Home Theater PCs that take up less space and operate quietly. PCs such as this can also help reduce energy consumption and the associated environmental impacts of traditional PC form factors," he also added.

Jim McGregor, research director and principal analyst, In-Stat said that both consumers and business men are looking for elegant PCs that can fit into their homes or offices. These products, although delivering the same performance as larger systems, should be smaller and noiseless. He also said: "Energy efficient desktop processors like the AMD Phenom X4 9100e offer greater performance-per-watt over traditional desktop CPUs while addressing the growing concerns of end-users for more energy efficient and eco-friendly products."

There are some energy-efficient innovations embedded in the AMD Phenom X4 9100e processor that facilitate a low level of energy consumption:
- Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology, the AMD award-winning energy-efficient technology;
- the AMD CoolCore technology enables users dynamically turn on or off parts of the processor to save more power;
- through the Independent Dynamic Core Technology the frequency and power usage of every processor can be independently adjusted;
- Dual Dynamic Power Management allows even more power control per processor;
- with AMD Wideband Frequency Control there is simplified performance state transition, which reduces power consumption as well;
- the Multi-Point Thermal Control reduces speed and heat in cases when temperature exceeds certain points.

The AMD Phenom X4 9100e processor should be available from PC vendors and System Builders. Further information on prices and availability will be made public on AMD's official site.

I can't wait to get Phenom X4 9100e when it comes to building an HTPC with an AMD 780G chipset and Hybrid Crossfire.
