AMD Llano on-die GPU gets benchmarked, delivers staggering performance

AMD's Llano accelerated processing units, which are expected to launch on June 1st, include the most advanced integrated graphics core built to date, and some recent benchmarks revealed that they manage to run a wide variety of games at frame rates above 30fps.

The Llano benchmarks that have reached the Web appear to be taken out of an AMD presentation and show the performance of three such APUs in various games.

To put into perspective the speed gains brought by Llano, AMD's APUs are compared with three processors from Intel's current Sandy Bridge lineup as well as with an E-350 chip.

The results are nothing short of surprising as in four of the five games tested, the GPU found inside the AMD A8-3850 APU is able to exceed the 30fps barrier.

Furthermore, the two other Llano APUs also offer similar performance, although they don't manage to hit the 30fps mark in all the testing scenarios.

In comparison, Intel's Sandy Bridge integrated graphics struggle to reach the 20fps mark, but one has to keep in mind that all the SNB processors used for this comparison use the less powerful HD 2000 GPU.

Sadly, we don't know what resolution the tests were run at, but, most probably, AMD went with an HD display (1366x768).

The graphics core that is integrated in the A8-3850 APU is called the Radeon HD 6550 and it features no less than 400 streaming processors. In comparison, the GPU used for the A4-3400 packs only 160 shaders.

However, both chips are based on the company's K10.5+/Husky x86 processor architecture and include a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller, a PCI Express controller, up to 4MB of cache and select CPUs even pack AMD's Turbo Core 2.0 dynamic acceleration technology.

The first AMD Llano accelerated processing units are expected to arrive on June 1, at the Computex 2011 fair. (via Donanim Haber)
